I wanted the sculpture of St John to be expressive of his earnestness and the emotional effect of the information he receives. Therefore, the whole of St John's torso leans forward in an extreme way. Despite being rooted to his rock, he stretches forward with all his might to receive and to hear.

St John's left hand grasps his heart with great urgency and forces his fingers deep into his clothing. I was trying to imagine this profound transformation, like that of love or loss, and so put this in the sculpture.

St John's face, I hope, expresses wonder, amazement and to some extent, fear, as anyone would feel, suddenly understanding something so extraordinary and so profound.
